Lo: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time and what
does the future hold for the “Original Single Girl”?
Sedenia:
Inspiring others, especially young
people. As far as what the future holds for
me, only God knows. I am taking guitar
lessons and I have a show in July. I will
continue to sing until the day I die. That’s
my passion and power, to make myself
and others happy.
Lo: Where was your heart at when you wrote the song “Single Girl”:
Carol:
I felt like it was therapy for my sister. Sharing
her story with listeners was like she was free, like
she came alive. She celebrated the victory and
refused to be a victim any longer.

Lo: Describes what the reaction was when the public first heard the
song: Carol:
When Gerald Sims first heard “Single Girl”
he knew it was a hit right away, he was so excited
about it. He and a friend of his were at Gerim Inc., I
was nervous, so I left the room and when I came
back he said “Carol, do you know what you have?"
Then after the release of “Single Girl” the Hot Mix
Five played it on the radio at WBMX and I felt like a
million dollars. It was heavenly, God had answered
my prayers.
Lo: Do you think music has the power to influence everyday
life and events, particularly girls or woman who have low
self esteem? Sedenia:
Yes. The song I will survive
inspired me. Every song connects with
individuals on this earth and the songs come
from real life experiences.
Lo: Could you take us through some personal highlights of your
hit house song, Single Girl? Sedenia:
Performing at the Park West  and the Marriott Hotel on Michigan Avenue, also
doing radio interviews at WGCI, they had a dating episode and I was the “Single Girl”. Another highlight in
my life was performing for Special Needs Children who showed me so much love and brought joy to my
heart also working with Mike and Duane in the recording studio. If you follow your dreams and stay focus,
your dreams will come true.
Lo: Do you have message to people who love your song
Single Girl? Sedenia:
Love yourself, is the
greatest love of all. Get into yourself, kiss
yourself, embrace yourself.
Just BE! God
made you special!

**Quote from my Mother, Anna: “With god in
my life, I made it with 10 children, I know you
can make it with 2”.

The Singer and the Song Writer:

Lo: What inspired you to write the House Hit " Single
Girl"? Carol:
My sister, Sedenia was going
through a divorce at the time and a
friend of ours by the name of Gerald
Sims, the owner of Gerim Inc., formally
known as “Chess Records” in
Chicago, introduced me to Duane and
Mike who worked at WBMX radio
station in Chicago.  Duane and Mike,
had a track that needed lyrics. He
wanted me to meet with them on
Thursday, they gave me the track and I
took it home. My husband, Jack said
“why don’t you write about what’s
going on in Sedenia's life and that's
how I came up with the title“Single
Girl”. When you listen to the song,
although Sedenia was married, she
was denied her freedom of expressing
herself by her husband. She was like a
prisoner in her own home and couldn’t
be who she wanted to be. She had 2
children and was getting out of an
abusive marriage. That’s why the lyrics
were so vivid.
Lo: As a song writer what is the hardest part about
writing this type of song, very personal, vs. a pop
song: Carol:
It wasn’t hard. It was a true
song and the words just flowed. It was
easy to write.
Lo: When recording “Single Girl”, how did your personal
experiences affect the record?  Sedenia:
It was reality to me.
I got married very young, I didn’t get a chance to
enjoy my life and to be free. I finally become the
person I wanted to be and was able to live my life
as a free woman. While being married, I was not
free,I was like a possession. I was able to express
myself through the song "Single Girl". When carol
wrote the song she must have felt my soul, it was
like I was free from jail. Being “single and free” I
wanted to enjoy my life, that was my time. I was
having fun!
Lo: Let’s switch channels to the Singer:

Lo: Same question: Sedenia: When Carol left the room, I stayed and when I
saw the look on their faces I knew it was hit. It was unbelievable,
Gerald was amazed.  He just said “Oh my God”, I knew you could do
it. He was so proud of us. Then, the day we heard it on the radio, it
was a dream come true. We jumped for joy, screamed and shouted in
the street, people thought we were crazy! We were so excited
because we knew God had answered our prayers. We had a hit on the
radio.
